Protecting Your Brisbane Home During Cold Snaps

Last winter, we received over 50 emergency calls in just three days when Brisbane experienced that unexpected cold snap in July. Burst pipes, failed hot water systems, and frozen outdoor taps caught many homeowners completely off guard. While Brisbane doesn’t get the harsh winters of southern Australia, those sudden temperature drops can still wreak havoc on your plumbing system.

The good news? With 30+ years of experience serving Brisbane families, myself and my team have seen it all – and more importantly, we know exactly how to prevent these costly disasters before they happen.

Why Brisbane Homes Are Particularly Vulnerable

Most Brisbane homes simply aren’t built for extreme cold weather. Our subtropical climate means builders typically don’t install the same freeze protection measures you’d find in Melbourne or Canberra. Outdoor pipes and garden taps are particularly at risk because they’re often exposed to the elements with minimal insulation.

Even a brief cold snap lasting just one or two nights can cause expensive damage. We’ve seen burst pipes flood laundries, frozen hot water systems fail completely, and outdoor taps crack beyond repair – all from temperatures that barely dropped below freezing.

In our many years serving Brisbane and South East Queensland, we’ve noticed a pattern: the homes that suffer the most winter plumbing damage are those where owners simply didn’t expect Brisbane’s weather to pose a threat. Don’t let your home become another winter casualty!

Your Essential Winter Plumbing Checklist

Protecting Your Outdoor Areas

โœ… Disconnect and drain all garden hoses This is the most important step you can take. Water left in hoses will freeze and expand, potentially cracking both the hose and the tap itโ€™s connected to. Store hoses in a shed or garage during cold snaps.

โœ… Cover outdoor taps with insulation Wrap exposed taps with old towels, bubble wrap, or purpose-made tap covers. Even newspaper secured with tape can provide enough insulation for Brisbaneโ€™s brief cold periods. Donโ€™t forget about taps in garages, under houses, or on garden walls.

โœ… Check for and repair leaking outdoor taps A dripping tap will freeze first and fastest. That constant water flow creates ice that can travel back into your pipes. If you notice any outdoor taps dripping, get them fixed before the next cold front arrives.

โœ… Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas Pipes running through garages, under houses, or in roof spaces need protection. Pool heating pipes are particularly vulnerable. Use pipe insulation (available from Bunnings) or even wrap them in old towels secured with duct tape.

Hot Water System Winter Preparation

โœ… Test your hot water system before cold weather hits Turn on all your hot taps and check for consistent hot water flow. Listen for any unusual noises from your hot water unit. Winter is when hot water systems work hardest โ€“ itโ€™s better to identify problems early.

โœ… Inspect around your hot water tank for leaks Look for water stains, rust marks, or actual dripping around the tank and connections. Even small leaks can become major problems when combined with cold weather stress on the system.

โœ… Ensure gas hot water systems have clear ventilation Check that flues arenโ€™t blocked by spider webs, bird nests, or debris. Proper ventilation is crucial for safe operation, especially when your system is working overtime during cold weather.

โœ… Locate your hot water system shut-off valves Know where to turn off both the water supply and gas/electricity to your hot water system. In an emergency, quick action can prevent extensive damage. If youโ€™re not sure where these are, ask us during your next service visit.

Indoor Precautions for Extreme Cold

โœ… Open cabinet doors under sinks during very cold nights This allows warm indoor air to circulate around pipes that run through exterior walls. Itโ€™s a simple trick that can prevent frozen pipes in kitchens and bathrooms.

โœ… Let taps drip slightly if temperatures drop below 2°C Moving water is much harder to freeze than still water. A slight drip from taps connected to vulnerable pipes can prevent freezing. Focus on taps connected to exterior walls or unheated areas.

โœ… Keep your home heated, even when you’re away If youโ€™re going away during winter, donโ€™t turn your heating off completely. Maintain at least 10-15ยฐC inside to protect your pipes. The small cost of heating is nothing compared to the cost of burst pipe repairs.

โœ… Know where your main water shut-off valve is located Every family member should know where this is and how to turn it off. In a burst pipe emergency, stopping the water flow quickly can save thousands of dollars in damage. Usually, itโ€™s near your water meter or where the main line enters your house.

What to Do If Your Pipes Do Freeze

If you turn on a tap and no water comes out, or just a trickle, you likely have a frozen pipe. Here’s what to do:

Never use direct heat sources like blowtorches, hair dryers on high heat, or heat guns. These can damage pipes or even cause them to burst from rapid temperature change.

Turn off your water at the main meter immediately. This prevents flooding if the pipe has already cracked.

Call Alexander Gas & Plumbing straight away. We have the proper equipment and experience to safely thaw frozen pipes without causing damage.

Don’t attempt DIY repairs on frozen or burst pipes. What seems like a simple fix often makes the problem worse and more expensive to repair properly.
